We will also meet March 14th, our last senate meeting of the quarter. February 20th – announce deadline for FSA changes to divisions District budget committee still needs a faculty representative. Minutes were approved unanimously. Consent calendar was also approved Student unit overloads – students are allowed to petition one quarter ahead of time for permission to enroll in 20 or more units. Students who take courses at both 17ГдЙЯ and De Anza will not show the ‘summed’ units taken at both colleges. It is believed that students can apply in advance for permission to enroll a total of 20 to 24 units. Counseling will generally forward applications with 24 or greater units to Bill Lindke. Students need to have an educational plan in place and know what courses are going to be taken. Question of how many people need are actually applying for overload - perhaps only 20 to 30 per quarter. Motion to table the discussion until we have more knowledge was passed unanimously. Basic skills resolution. Goal of the resolution is to have students experience greater success by having prerequisites already taken. Faculty have an option of either prerequisites or advisories in place for a course. Studies show that students who are missing English / math don’t do as well. Additionally, students put of math / English until the very end. Divisions and departments need to examine how students who are under prepared can even pass college classes. Students who can’t read or write English are not an uncommon occurrence in ‘context classes’. The issue of enrollments may be causing some divisions to stay away from prerequisites. Senate wants divisions to agendize this issue (locally), and consider appropriate and effective use of prerequisites and advisories for courses, not just English and math. Articulation might be an issue if FH continues to pass students who cannot write a readable assignment. Concern about plagiarism in ‘writing’ assignments. If a transfer class has a prerequisite in the higher institution, should the prerequisites be similar? Basic Skills resolution passes unanimously. Personnel and HR have not had a workshop in basic skills recently. This was recommended as a perfect topic for opening day activities next year. Faculty ‘teach-in’ – Robert Cormia discussed the faculty teach-in held on Wednesday February 2nd to support Joe Wilcox, and discuss the issues associated with this event. It is critical to have a good dean to help you out. Hiring practice of deans was discussed. Need to agendize the Academic Bill of Rights. Disruptive behavior. Faculty should always encourage students to voice opinion in an academic debate, but students should be held accountable for ‘intolerance’ and more importantly, faculty, as a group, should be wary of concerted efforts on the part of students in creating a hostile work environment. Professionalism on the part of faculty includes faculty and administrative support in upholding these standards. Textbook issues. Paul Starer and Kee-Hoon Chung Tuition and book costs have been rising, and the cost of books in particular has risen at a much faster pace than other costs, including tuition. Textbooks in particular are close to $900 to $1,000 annually. Students would like faculty to choose older editions of textbooks whenever possible. Faculty that can adopt the same textbook will also save students money by allowing the bookstore to purchase in great quantities and at lower prices. Common adoption of a text by a department will also save bookstore costs. Students now go to half.com and Amazon Z-shops to purchase used textbooks. Andy Fraknoi spoke about authors losing revenue when used textbooks are sold. Paul Starer and Kee-Hoon Chung (and Brian Evans) will bring this issue to the divisions in a series of meetings. Faculty speaker selection – Dolores Davison Notice is being sent out to faculty. Students bring names to academic senate, then senate will approach faculty. Draft language to ensure that process is followed (above). Have students bring names to the senate for faculty to consider. This years keynote speaker will be a Yahoo! co-founder.
